SITUATION
An emergency response was required following a failing force main sewer pipeline and the need for repairs at the headworks facility. The project involved bypassing up to 60 MGD (111 cfs) through approximately 29,800 linear feet of 12-inch, 18-inch, and 24-inch HDPE pipe at the Reno-Sparks Wastewater Treatment Plant.
CHALLENGE
The bypass system needed to overcome large static head requirements while allowing flows to be increased or decreased based on plant operations. The project also included environmentally sensitive temporary pipeline crossings.
SOLVED
A plan was developed to address both the temporary pipeline creek crossings and the technical requirements of the wastewater treatment plant. Crews quickly deployed the necessary manpower and equipment and coordinated implementation with the treatment plant, subcontractors, the city, and the engineering firm. Once operational, flows were adjusted to match plant operator requirements, and the system was monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week for five months.
