Deer Creek Sanitary Tunnel
Situation
A wastewater management project that aims to combat sewer system backups in a suburban St. Louis County. It will be able to temporarily store wastewater and give the ability to move more water through, during heavy rains and prevent the wastewater from going into nearby creeks and streams as well as prevent basement backups.
Solved
The Deer Creek Tunnel will be approximately 3.9 miles long, extending from Clayton Road in the City of Clayton, to Interstate 44 in the City of Shrewsbury. The tunnel will be bored into deep rock around 150-250 feet below the ground surface and have an inside diameter of approximately 19 feet. The tunnel will collect and temporarily store wastewater during peak periods, adding capacity to collect, transport, and store wastewater that the existing Deer Creek area sewer system cannot handle during moderate to heavy rain.
